Auroral Magic
Very peaceful and relaxing songs that promote emotional and physical health, made for meditation, spa sessions, massage sessions, energy healing sessions, and anywhere an overall chill vibe fits, bringing us closer to the spiritual life force or healing power that permeates the universe. The vocals are arranged around the instrumental parts, I hear piano, a little guitar, and electronics with hints of field recordings of nature sounds. These ancestral chants and instrumentals open the door for an important, fascinating, complicated, and unique wisdom that works on a mental and emotional level. The album cover features a powerful woman carrying a handmade staff, on a bright winter day. She is by a frozen lake with mountains in the background. The album title, Auroral Magic, refers to the aurora borealis, also the word auroral pertains to the light of dawn and a new beginning. Magic is a complicated word that brings to mind the show-biz notion of delightfully enchanting entertainment, as well as a darker more mysterious power for influencing the course of events by using supernatural forces. The night sky is filled with magic lights which forecast the future of the earth, and speaks of the spirits of the ancestors.
Chakuna Machi Asa is a natural healer and a singer-songwriter who has been creating music, lyrics, and videos in Southeastern Michigan. She has been working for years on perfecting her art and music, figuring out the best ways of sharing healing energies with all who will benefit from it. I had the opportunity to ask her about her work, "My intention as an artist is to help open you up to a new experience of the multidimensional reality of human existence," she shares. "I always set my intention that any songs I create are healing for the listener. Overall, I am striving to evoke or call upon a more peaceful vibe in your mind, body, heart and soul."
Her roots are mostly Scandinavian, she is a Professional Healer, Artist, Vegan, Crystal Lover, and Seiðr. I did my research, and Seiðr appears to translate from the Old Norse tongue, something along the lines of “cord, thread, snare, or halter,” and is related to the mystical Shaman healing practices, with a distinctive Northern European rootform. With a cord, one can not only bind, but also pull remote things closer. The ancient practice of a Seiðr is concerned with discerning the course of fate and working within its structure to bring about change, and the transmission of healing energy, thus combining seeing the future and taking steps to correct or positively influence the unfolding of destiny.
Crystals have existed on earth for millions of years, and are very much part of the working knowledge that Chanuka has in her grasp: Aura Quartz, Quartz, Labradorite, Crystal Girds, Gems, Chakra Healing, Ambient Meditation, Fairy Stardust... What I hear is awesome vibrational energy with a profound awareness of sound, essence and healing, all working in perfect harmony because they're an extension of nature's innate balance, and here to give us love and light. The elements of this music all work together because they're an extension of nature's advancement, bringing good thoughts, a healthy mindset and creating an increased feeling of overall well being, which promotes the flow of good energy to protect and guide the people in our lives, and all around. Learn to let go of fears that hold you back in life.
The first track is a little bit scary, posing root questions which link the earth and the spirits of the ancestors. I hear the sound of a canoe paddling on quiet water, some birds, and the very light touch of an acoustic guitar. "Blood of Our Ghost" (4:03), is a chanted poem which sets the tone for the album, connecting to the sacred ceremonies of remembering and honoring the past. In the time of our grandfathers, in America, immigrants were required to stop speaking their tongue of origin and asked to not pass down their traditions and customs, their children were cut off from everything about the old country, causing their family spirits to become lost, like ghosts that remain in the dark unknown places. This song is about bringing these spirits home, to once again lead the way, as ancestors traditionally have always done.
"Elven Magic" (3:07) has an electronic orchestral power, accented with tinkling wind chimes, deep strings, and features strong aggressive vocals and breaths. This singular track is an expression of power in a constellation of mystical dreams. An elf is a small, elusive figure in human form with pointed ears, small, mischievous creatures thought to have magical powers, and a capricious nature, sometimes elves are called "hidden people."
I am not sure where this specific destination is, "Planet Xeron" (6:19), and maybe it does not require that we know the specific coordinates for succeeding with the journey, as we go there with Chakuna. On the way, I hear a quiet synthesizer, percussion, vocals in layers, whispers, a beautiful compliment for that journey. The mysterious name Xeron might draw the impression of a friendly, sensitive, and practical nature, it might also sound a bit like the element Xenon. The duration of this journey is episodic, creating a new experience for you.
With a synthesizer, delicate piano and water splashing, "Dancing Reflections" (2:41), makes me think of those who send their mind forth in spirit form to do tasks outside of their body, shadows in motion. Both the will of the magician, and magical winds, could be visualized as something spun, such as a thread or a ball of yarn, magic manifesting as wind, which in turn associates the spirit with breath. "The Wind" (6:40), brings the sound of wind chimes, piano, and growling synthesizer winds, vocal sounds, and breath. "Time Womb" (5:45) has a complicated and thought inspiring title, gestation is a long slow process, the mother surrounds her growing new life and gives her love and light. I hear strings and piano, and the synthesizer swells within.
A blue moon simply means a rare event, usually each season has three full moons, sometimes there are four moons cycling through and appearing in one season. This instrumental track emerges featuring a piano with tiny extra noises, "Blue Moon" (6:20). There is evidence of a musical epiphany underway. Calling all the angels to time and space, percussion, vocals, piano, and synthesizer growls. The lyrics depict a gathering of circumstances and elements to bring about natural cosmic growth, "Space Shift" (5:02) has a message to absorb and utilize. My favorite track is titled "Our Escape" (7:46) and features a piano at the foundation, accompanied by a synthesizer, very delicate, with vocal growls and low intonations in order to evoke the sounds of spirit journeys into other lands. The escape is an adventure traversing unknown places of danger and uncertainty.
Cetaceans make very haunting sounds, I believe that this track, "The Whale Song" (5:45), is more about honoring the spirit of these deep sea wanderers, without imitating their calls, bubbles and whistles. There is a piano with slight water sounds, which make me think of waves on the shore, and ethereal vocal intonations.
A combination of night crickets, piano, and splashing water sounds, this next instrumental is titled "John" (7:28). Chanuka wrote this song in honor of her father in law, who passed away just before she put Auroral Magic into production. The song fit perfectly in the album because he represented the same energy to her of what this album is all about, honoring her ancestors, people and guides who have helped her in her life, and providing a feeling of safety. He always made her feel safe and respected. "I never felt judged by him and he was just someone that didn't talk about people behind their backs," she remembers. "We could always count on him as a force of strength in our family. There just aren't many people like John anymore. Respect was important to him and something that he shared with me that I wanted to honor by sharing this song with others."
The title track closes this album, "Auroral Magic" (4:51), with full synthesizers, bells, chimes, wind chimes, piano, sometimes shimmering, a haunting melody. I think of exquisite crystals, the dawn, and something like a new beginning. What is the true meaning of magic?
Chakuna Machi Asa is a transformative sound healing artist who practices in the ancient tradition of overtone chanting and shamanic drumming. Her spiritual name translates from multiple different languages to “Ancestor, Healer.” The name Chakuna comes from the Quechua word Machakuna which means Ancestor. If one chooses to pronounce “Machi” as Ma-KEE (Ma-Qi), it roughly translates to “my energy,” which she believes she has carried with her from a past life to this one so that she may use her gifts to transmit these healing vibes. Throughout her life, she has skillfully used sound vibration to activate the awakened natural state of universal being and inspire personal transformation.
To me that brings to mind that which Is becoming, seeking to understand otherworldly visions and what might be called “spirit emissaries.” She offers video teachings, music, high vibe energy healing tools, crystals, handmade wands, and jewelry to encourage us as individuals to explore our spiritual energy, to get in touch with our authentic self and to help us to add a spark of inspirational magic into our everyday life.
